The challenge: An escalating water shortage

From analysis of supply demand pressures carried out as part of the WRMP19 process on infrastructure and assets, Anglian Water found that due to external forces such as climate change and population growth, by 2040, the company would have a water deficit of 146 mega litres per day. Coming from a 144 ml/d surplus in 2020, the organisation needed to make up a 290 mega litre swing through strategic asset investments and major demand-side reductions.

The solution: an A1 standard smart water metering service

Anglian Water knew that in order to better understand and combat leaks in the company’s network and help reduce demand, it was vital to introduce smart meters and the latest innovative technology.

Anglian Water has always been determined to lead from the front in the water industry. As a leading performer in tackling leakage, they recognised the need to invest in an effective smart metering programme. For Doug Spencer, Head of Smart Water Metering at Anglian Water, reliable connectivity was a critical factor in the company’s decision-making.

The impact: a pioneering smart water metering programme

Anglian Water chose to partner with Arqiva, the UK’s leading AMI smart water meter service provider, with the largest number of AMI smart water meters installed in the UK, and a proven track record of significant leakage and per capita consumption (PCC) reduction. To date, the partnership has brought 979,000 meters online. By 2025, the region will have 1.1 million new AMI smart meter devices installed across businesses and homes, with a further 1.2 million by 2030.

The partnership has improved data capture and asset management, enabling Anglian Water to both tackle leakage and enhance customer service. By identifying and fixing leaks through smart meter data, Anglian Water has achieved significant demand-side savings. Its AMI smart metering programme has also delivered additional benefits to customers, such as reduced bills, while initiating new conversations about consumption. Arqiva is now working with Anglian Water to maximise its network for new use cases, with promising results.
